Dear St. John’s Friends and Family,
My childhood home had a huge tree in the front yard with sweeping long branches that lended shade. There my dad made a tire swing that was tied to one of the strong branches. At night the branches would cast shadows through my bedroom window when the moon was bright. In the last several weeks we’ve used the tree as a metaphor for spiritual growth. Like the roots of a tree, we are rooted in God’s love. And we grow together in Christ like the trunk. Now we take a closer look at the branches.
St. John’s lay leader, Gary Scoggin, shares how we branch out into community through mission and ministry. Not only do we branch out, we also produce good fruit. Gary also reminds us that hanging out on a limb can be risky. To follow Christ can be risky. Christ often leads us outside of our comfort zone.
As we worship together, may God give us the courage to take the kinds of risks that reveals Christ and the love of God that we are so deeply rooted in.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Stephanie
