People in this stage are shifting from DOING things to learning to BE in the presence of God. This is a stage of more intimacy with God–a sharing of our self with God and learning to let go of relying on ourselves. In this stage, we begin to allow God to shape our thoughts and actions. We are becoming more and more like Jesus in our own unique way. Jesus invited the disciples to just BE with him in Mark 3:13-19 (NRSV).
He [Jesus] went up the mountain and called to him those whom he wanted, and they came to him. And he appointed twelve to be with him and to be sent out to preach and to have authority to cast out demons. So he appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter), James son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder), and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, who handed him over.
After participating in all the opportunities to learn to follow Jesus, sometimes it’s hard to learn to be quiet and listen to God. Prayer becomes more important to people in this stage–learning to talk to God and learning to listen to God’s voice. In this stage, people are beginning to serve outside of the church and figure out how God wants them to use their spiritual gifts. Here are some opportunities that invite you to come and be.
- Attend a Walk to Emmaus. This 3-day spiritual retreat is an opportunity to spend time with God. You can find more information HERE.
- Consider trusting God with your finances. Tithing (giving 10% of your income to the church) is one way to respond to the loving relationship with God by supporting the ministries of St. John’s. You can find out more about giving HERE.
- Join the Disciple Bible Study. Twice a year, we offer this intensive dive into scripture. You can find out more about this bible study HERE.
- Ask to meet with one of the pastors or staff at the church or over a cup of coffee at the local coffee shop. Call the church office at 409-655-5348.
Next Steps
We encourage people in the stage to take the next step in their faith journey. Here are some opportunities that will give you an opportunity to learn and grow and move to the next stage.
- If you have been on The Walk to Emmaus, consider serving on the Emmaus team. You can find more information about how to serve HERE.
- Consider how God is calling you to serve. What can you do with your gifts and talents to serve the kingdom of God? How can you serve the community? Spend time in prayer asking God for direction.
- Find a spiritual friend and be accountable to each other for your spiritual growth. Ask your friend, “How is it with your soul?”
- Be a prayer partner for our youth and young adults. Contact Rev. Stephanie Hughes for more information.
- Consider sacrificial giving in response to all that God is doing in your life. Sacrificial giving is giving beyond the tithe of 10%.
